Anxiety Attacks: What are they?

Anxiety attacks, also known as panic attacks, are episodes of intense and overwhelming rush of panic or fear. Anxiety attacks usually occur suddenly and without warning.

Panic attacks usually peak within ten minutes, and rarely last more than thirty minutes. However, during this time, the terror can be extremely severe. For people experiencing a panic attack for the first time, it can be particularly frightening. And for those who have experienced it before, it can be very overwhelming as well even while they cognitively know that they are not going to die or lose control. The physical symptoms of anxiety attacks lead many to believe that they are having a heart attack.
Emergency rooms often see cases of first time panic attacks where a person or their family member may fear that they are having a heart attack.

An anxiety is so scary that very often people who have had one will worry about when and where they are going to have another one.

Anxiety Attacks: What does it look like?

Susan’s husband dies suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 59. Susan had been a stay-at-home mom since she was married at 23. Now at the age of 54 she felt not just emotionally devastated at the side loss but also felt completely unprepared to handle practical matters relating to finances, legal affairs and property matters. Susan’s husband always handled these things and she did not know how and where to even start.
Suddenly she was having to take responsibility of all these matters. She did not even know how to pay bills online. Minor repairs around the house that her husband took care of had to be handled. The costs of these repairs were mounting and Susan constantly second-guessed herself and worried if she was being duped or overcharged.

After about 3 months, Susan had started getting a handle on some things. Then one day she received a bill for $36 that she did not recognize. Even as she walked back from her mailbox, she could feel the familiar tightening of her chest and an overwhelming feeling of dread. In her mind, Susan knew that this bill was a small amount and also that she would probably figure out where it was coming from. But that did not matter. The accumulated stress of the past few months was taking a toll on her emotional health. She had remained strong in the face of the uphill battles but now a small bill was unraveling her poise and resolve. By the time, Susan sat down down at her kitchen table, she was crying uncontrollably.
